नीतीची उत्क्रांती

सगळ्यांचा असा समज आहे की अमेरिकेत पैसा हेच सर्वस्व असून त्यामागेच ते धावताहेत. वॉल स्ट्रीट जर्नल हे तर बोलून चालून शेअर्स वाल्यांचे. आणि त्यात "उत्क्रांतीच्या मानस शास्त्रा " संबंधी इतकी सखोल बातमी, चर्चा यावी हे खूप आश्चर्याचे आहे.

बातमी अशी की कोणी प्रोफेसर, मार्क हाउझर नावाचे, हार्वर्ड विद्यापीठात होते. ते शिकवीत उत्क्रांतीचे मानसशास्त्र. ह्यात त्यांना असे दाखवायचे होते की माणसाचे नीतीमत्तेचे विचार हे निसर्गत: उत्क्रांत झाले आहेत व ते वैज्ञानिक पद्धतीने आपण मांडतो आहोत असे दाखवण्य़ासाठी त्यांनी काही माकडांवर प्रयोग केले व त्यातून नीतीमत्तेचे विचार कसे उत्क्रांत झाले आहेत, हे साधार दाखवण्याचा त्यांनी प्रयत्न केला. आता इथवर तरी काही वावगे वाटत नाही. पण पुढे म्हटले आहे की त्यांना विद्यापीठाने तीन वर्षांच्या प्रदीर्घ चौकशीनंतर, अवैज्ञानिक पवित्रा बाळगल्याबद्दल,दोषी ठरवले आहे. ते सध्या एक वर्षाच्या रजेवर गेले आहेत. म्हणजे जवळ जवळ काढूनच टाकल्यासारखे.

अशा काय माकडचेष्टा ह्या महाशयांच्या अंगलट आल्या ? तर असे कळते की त्यांनी माकडांच्या प्रतिक्रिया आपल्याला पाहिजे तशा प्रयोगात बदलवून घेतल्या, त्या खर्‍या नव्हत्या. हार्वर्ड विद्यापीठाची ही फारच काटेकोर वैज्ञानिक जाणीव आपल्याकडे तर धसकाच आणणारी वाटेल. आपण पीएचड्यांचे प्रबंध चोरून डॉक्टर करतो आणि इथे एका प्रसिद्ध मानसशास्त्रज्ञाला प्रयोगात खोडसाळपणा केल्याबद्दल इतकी दखल ! बरे ह्या गृहस्थांचे बर्‍यापैकी नाव आहे, "मॉरल माइंडस" नावाचे एक पुस्तक गाजलेले आहे, इंटरनेट वर "मॉरल सायन्स टेस्ट" नावाची एक टेस्ट ह्यांची प्रसिद्ध आहे ( सध्या ती काढलेली आहे ) आणि हे बर्‍यापैकी गाजलेले आहेत. पण नुसते त्यांनी आपले मत म्हणून हे मांडले असते तर मानसशास्त्रासारख्या कलाविषयात हे धकण्यासारखे होते. पण त्याचे शास्त्र करायचे, प्रयोग करायचे व त्यात खोटेपणा करायचा ह्याने हार्वर्डसारख्या विद्यापीठाला नक्कीच बट्टा लागल्यासारखे आहे. विज्ञानाची इतकी मानमराबता वाखाणण्यासारखी तर आहेच, शिवाय अर्थव्यवस्थेने इतके त्रस्त केलेले असताना वॉल स्ट्रीट सारख्या वर्तमानपत्राला ह्या बातमीचे अप्रूप वाटावे व ते त्यांनी सविस्तर समजून सांगावे ही सुद्धा अपार कौतुकाची बाब आहे.

पैशासाठी पदोपदी नीतीमत्ता पायदळी घेणार्‍या अमेरिकेला आपली नीतीमत्ता कशी बनते ह्याचा अभ्यास शास्त्रीय काटेकोरपणे व्हावा असे वाटावे हीच खूप महान नीतीची गोष्ट आहे व त्यासाठी त्यांचे अभिनंदन करावे तितके कमीच आहे !

Valuing Evolutionary Psychology

We presume that whole America is in hot pursuit of money and wealth. And Wall Street Journal, as the name suggests should be all about money. On such a background it is refreshing thought to see that it has given such a prominant space for a news about Evolutionary Psychology.

The news is about virtual sacking of one professor, Mr. Marc Hauser, of Harvard University, for his scientific misconduct on eitht counts. The professor has already confessed of a "mistake" and has proceeded on one years leave of absence. This professor was quite popular in Psychology circuit through his book "Moral Minds: How Nature designed our universal sense of right & Wrong" and various tests on internet. What the professor was trying to do in the university through research on monkeys is that our sense of morals has been developed through the evolution and it does not owe the pressures from relijgion, society or reason. While managing the experiments, it turned out that he manipulated the reactions of the monkeys to suit the conclusions, which is a moral sin in Science. What is so noteworthy in the episode is that while the natiion is going through economic and social turmoil, the newspaper values the upkeep or morals of Universily, thereby nurturing the scientific fabric in the society. All the kudos to the Wall Street Journal and Harvard University for such high standards !

When in everyday pursuite of money, in various walks of life, we find the scant attention we give to morals and its evolution, it is so heartening to see that the newspaper has taken lot of space and efforts in explaining why morals have to be kept upright whether they are evolved through nature or otherwise !
